Nellens Roger (1937 – 2021)

Roger Nellens was a Belgian painter, born in Liège in 1937 and died in Knokke-Heist in 2021. He was, with his family, a major figure in the art scene of the Belgian coast, notably at the Knokke casino, which allowed him to meet many artists, including Niki de Saint Phalle, Jean Tinguely and Keith Haring with whom he became friends.

Self-taught, he made his debut in painting in 1960. First influenced by Permeke, he then turned to P. Delvaux, who advised and supported him, to paint trains and signals. From 1969, he created his “imaginary machines”, poetic and sometimes anthropomorphic.

He painted, in particular, a monumental mural 14 meters long visible in the metro station Gribaumont in Brussels.

It appears in the Lexicon van West-Vlaamse beeldende kunstenaars (the Lexicon of visual artists of West Flanders) I, BAS I and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. (Piron)
