Lithogravure entitled “Lapis-Lazuli”, representing a pretty young woman from the roaring twenties with magnificent blue eyes and porcelain complexion and signed by William Barribal. The signature is not visible in this frame.
Presented under glass in an oval frame in silver-toned wood, sculpted and a blue all-rounder forming a highly decorative and refined ensemble, in perfect harmony with the portrait.
William Henry Barribal (1874–1952)
Is an English artist from London who began his career as a lithographer before continuing his studies at the Académie Julian in Paris.
At the turn of the 20th century, Barribal became an accomplished painter and designer. He created a series of images that were used on recruitment posters from the First World War in Britain. During the 1920s and 1930s he created a range of posters for the Schweppes advertising campaign and in 1921 he was hired to work for Waddingtons, producing works that were used for posters and later playing cards. His bold Art Deco posters designed in the 1920s and 1930s for the London and North Eastern Railway are also well known. His wife, Gertrude Louisa Fannie Pitt, was his main role model.
Barribal also worked for various magazines, including the major fashion magazine Vogue, and regularly exhibited his works between 1919 and 1938. Her portraits of refined and elegant Edwardian women have become classics, and the works of many modern fashion artists bear traces of the inimitable “Barribal style”.
