Pietercelie Alfred (1878 -1995)
*Alfred Pietercelie is a renowned Belgian artist born in Antwerp in 1879 and died in Jette/Brussels in 1995. Painter and decorator, he studied at the Academies of Antwerp, Brussels and Anderlecht (1893-1900). He exhibited for the first time in 1917 with the group L’Œuvre Nouvelle. His work is characterized by a search for ‘essential’ design, often exuding a sense of peace, harmony and emotion. He specialized in the landscapes of the Brussels countryside, the Ourthe valley and the south of France, the latter inspiring a palette of sunnier and more vibrant colors. He was also a recognized painter of flowers and still lifes. Settled in Jette in 1936, he founded the Cercle de Jette in 1938 and remained its president until his death. Mentioned extensively in the National Biography of the Royal Academy of Belgium, volume XXXVII. Mentioned in BAS I and Two centuries of signatures by Belgian artists.
