"Le XXe siècle en 2000 dessins de presse", J. Lamalle, P. Lestrohan, Les Arènes, 2012

Important book of press drawings concerning the 20th century.

The craze began in the 1900s, with a flowering of illustrated satirical newspapers. The most famous were called L’Assiette au Beurre, Le Cocorico, Le Rire. During the Great War, press cartoons are a way to conjure horror with laughter, notably with Le Canard enchaîné, La Baïonnette and Le Crapouillot. The Popular Front, the rise of Nazism, the Spanish War and the Occupation are the scene of violent clashes. With the 30 glorieuses, press cartoons are turning more towards comedy of manners and satire of consumer society. It is the emergence of a ‘clear line’ embodied by Bosc and Sempé. The Algerian war and May 68 put the most virulent press cartoon, Siné in the lead, back into the spotlight. Le Canard enchaîné mocks General de Gaulle with Moisan, Tim makes the beautiful days of L’Express, the teams from Hara-Kiri and Charlie Hebdo, with Reiser and Cabu, push the boundaries of propriety. The major dailies all had their emblematic cartoonist: Faizant for Le Figaro, Plantu for Le Monde, Willem for Libération.
